Let’s be honest, we tend to overcomplicate things in life. From what to wear on any given day, what to pursue as a career, even what to eat for dinner. Humans are notorious for overcomplicating things. While we’re being honest, let’s also recognize that this overcomplication of our lives is stressing us out. Ironically, the thing we have a tendency to do is the exact thing stealing our joy. Knowing this, how can we stop overcomplicating everything? In this post, we are going to take a look at the 3 tips for a less complicated life
3 Tips to Stop Overcomplicating Things
1. Go With Your Gut
So often our overcomplication of things begins when we start second guessing ourselves. Think about the life of a child, for instance. A child knows what they want and they are not afraid to let other know what that is. Childhood also tends to be the least complicated time in our lives. I would argue that this is because as children, we don’t constantly second-guess ourselves or what we want. We choose to go with our instinctual response (granted, this might not always be the best option….). We “go with our gut”.
In order to uncomplicate our lives, we need to pursue the act of following our gut instincts (within reason, that is). Becoming more like children in this way will allow us to begin to ditch the complicated ways we have conditioned ourselves into believing are necessary in adult life.
2. Get Rid of Clutter
This is a big one (ok, well these are all big things to think about, but you know what I mean). The accumulation of “stuff” and the constant busyness we fill our days with are overwhelming. I struggle in this area, and I’m guessing you do too in one way or another.
Maybe it’s a house filled with things you don’t really use, but can’t possibly get rid of because what if you need it one day?! Or maybe your clutter looks like a constantly full and ever-changing schedule that even the most efficient worker could never accomplish. Whatever it is for you, your clutter is likely causing complication in your life where there should be simplicity and joy.
Eliminating clutter decreases the complication and distraction it often brings with it. This provides space to focus on what really matters and is an important step in having a less complicated life.
3. Stop Worrying About What People Think
Admittedly, this is probably the one area that I struggle with the most. Even as I sit here writing these tips on uncomplicating things in life, I am stressing about what you might think of what I am writing. Why do we do this to ourselves?!
I wish I had the answer to this question and that I knew how to stop worrying about what other people think once and for all. Unfortunately, I don’t have those things. What I do have is the reminder to continue focusing on what really matters. If we want to lead a less complicated life, we must stop worrying so much about what other people may think (I know, easier said than done). I believe this is a process and involves the daily (maybe even moment by moment!!) choice to not worry what others may or may not think.
I hope these 3 tips help you to stop overcomplicating things in your life. Let’s commit to less overthinking, less overcomplicating things, and greater joy! I am so ready to stop letting overcomplication steal my joy in life. What about you??
